3G Development in China September 7-13

- US-based chipmaker Marvell announced on September 8 that the company has launched its first single-chip solution based on TD-SCDMA (Time Division-Synchronous Code Division Multiple Access) technology, codenamed the Marvell PXA920, the SinoCast daily Business Beat News reported on September 7. The PXA920 can support all the mainstream open source operating systems, including OMS (Open Mobile System) platform developed by China Mobile. China Mobile stated that it plans to use the PXA920 for its TD-SCDMA phones running on the OMS platform (Ophones) with a price tag of 1,000 RMB (US$147.1; US$1 = 6.8 RMB). On August 31, 2009, China Mobile delivered the first batch of Ophones, including four types of TD-SCDMA phones under the brand names of Lenovo, Hisense, LG, and Philips.

- Chinese telecom equipment supplier ZTE recently announced that the company has landed a 40,000 high-end Smartphone order from China Unicom, at a 3G terminal procurement fair in Harbin, China, held by the operator, the Sina Tech News reported on September 10. Additionally, ZTE also launched a complete line of WCDMA (Wideband Code Division Multiple Access) phones at the fair. WCDMA phones purchased at this fair aim to boost China Unicom's market penetration in North China and China Unicom also plans to hold the same fair in Eastern, Southern and Southwestern China, in the near future, according to the same source.
